Non-certified fertilizers in organic farming
More knowledge about non-organic means of production that are allowed to be used in organic agriculture is important for producers, advisers and authorities.
Project description
The project involves an assessment of non-certified fertilisers that can be used in organic agriculture in accordance with EU regulations. The assessment will be carried out in close cooperation with, among others, the Norwegian Food Safety Authority and Debio. The project will focus on the following three tasks.
Increasing knowledge about fertilizers used by organic producers
The project will collect data about selected fertilizers used by organic producers, such as biogas digestate and fertilizers containing residues of pyridine and pyrimidine herbicides.
Identifying obstacles to the increased use of recycled nutrients from household and industrial waste materials
The amount of different types of waste organic matter that can be recycled as raw material for fertilizer production is increasing. However, knowledge of these materials is often insufficient, as is the case for struvite.
Assessing the suitability of certain fertilizers listed in the guidelines to the Norwegian organic standards
A review of selected fertilizers will provide useful information for producers who would like to apply these fertilizers.
